The Signature Style of Hope Town: Interior Design & Island Decor

Tucked away on the charming shores of Elbow Cay, you’ll find more than just pastel cottages and a historic lighthouse—you’ll discover a distinct interior design style that perfectly captures relaxed island living with timeless coastal elegance.

Whether you're visiting, decorating a vacation home, or just dreaming of island life, here’s what defines the unmistakable Hope Town aesthetic.

Light, Airy, and Effortless

Hope Town interiors are all about embracing natural light and ocean breezes. Homes are designed to feel open and relaxed, often featuring:

  • White or soft neutral walls

  • Large windows and shutters

  • Breezy layouts that blur indoor and outdoor living

The goal? Let the surroundings do the decorating.

The color inspiration comes straight from the island:

  • Seafoam or other punchy greens- Hunter green is a classic Hope Town hurricane shutter colour. It stems from the 1910's when there was limited freight to the island. 5 gallons of hunter green paint was shared throughout the island.

  • Sandy beiges

  • Sky blues

  • Crisp whites

You’ll also see pops of coral, turquoise, and pastel tones that mirror the iconic cottages around town.

Natural Materials & Textures

A big part of the charm is the use of organic, locally inspired materials:

  • Light wood (often weathered or whitewashed)

  • Rattan and wicker furniture

  • Linen and cotton fabrics

  • Jute rugs and woven accents

These textures add warmth without feeling heavy.

Subtle Nautical Touches

Unlike overly themed beach houses, Hope Town decor keeps things refined:

  • Driftwood and distressed wood accents

  • Shell/beach find decor (used sparingly)

  • Rope and knot details

  • Vintage maritime pieces

It’s coastal—but never cliché.

Comfortable, Livable Spaces

This is not a place for stiff, formal interiors. Everything is designed for real living:

  • Plush sofas with washable slipcovers

  • Open dining areas for gathering

  • Outdoor seating that feels like an extension of the home

Comfort always comes first.

Local Art & Personal Character

Many homes feature:

  • Paintings of island scenes

  • Handmade crafts

  • Family and travel pieces

This adds personality and keeps each space unique—nothing feels mass-produced.

Indoor-Outdoor Living

In Hope Town, the line between inside and outside disappears:

  • Covered porches and verandas

  • French doors opening to ocean views

  • Outdoor dining and lounge spaces

Living here means enjoying the environment at every moment.

How to Bring the Look Home

Want to recreate the vibe?

  • Stick to a light, neutral base

  • Add texture instead of clutter

  • Choose quality over quantity

  • Keep things simple and relaxed

Think: coastal calm meets lived-in charm.

Final Thoughts

The beauty of Hope Town design is that it never tries too hard. It’s organic, inviting, and deeply connected to its surroundings. It reflects a slower pace of life—one where comfort, nature, and simplicity take center stage.

Just because you’re in the islands doesn’t mean you need overtly themed décor—turtles on pillows, busy prints, or anything that feels too on the nose. Pull it back. Subtle, thoughtful accents always work best.

If you’re aiming for a high-end, timeless look, keep your base clean and classic. Crisp white sheets, simple white duvets, and just a few understated accent pillows go a long way. Let the textures, light, and setting do the rest.

Whether you're staying for a week or a lifetime, this design style has a way of making you feel instantly at home.

Here’s a small collection of some of my favorite designs around the island. There’s so much inspiration to draw from—some beautifully simple, others more distinctive—but all unmistakably Hope Town.
