The Story of Hope Town Canvas - All Bahamian!

In a town where the streets are made for golf carts and bicycles, and the history is woven into the very fabric of the colorful cottages, it only makes sense that the most sought-after souvenir is literally woven from the history of the sea.

Hope Town Canvas isn’t just a shop; it’s a masterclass in island resourcefulness and artful upcycling. If you’re visiting Elbow Cay, a stop at their studio is practically a rite of passage.

The Story: From Kitchen Table to Island Icon

Founded in 2013 by local artist Nakia Wong-Wilhoyte, Hope Town Canvas began as a passion project on a humble kitchen table. The inspiration? A backyard full of old sails.

Nakia’s husband’s family had deep roots in the island's first sailboat charter business, and those weathered, retired sails were essentially "ocean-aged" treasures waiting for a second life. Though Nakia didn't know how to sew at first, her husband and father-in-law—both lifelong sailors—taught her the ropes (and the stitches). Today, the business has grown from a kitchen table to a beautiful dedicated studio and shop right in the heart of Hope Town.

The Craft: Art with a Soul

Every bag at Hope Town Canvas tells a story. Because they use recycled sails, no two pieces are ever identical.

  • The Material: These sails have weathered real Atlantic storms and soaked up the Bahamian sun. They carry the "character marks"—small scuffs or unique stitching—from their former lives at sea.

  • Hand-Drawn Designs: Nakia hand-draws the stencils and designs, often featuring local icons like the candy-striped lighthouse, sea turtles, or anchors.

  • The "W" Signature: Keep an eye out for the signature "W" (standing for Wong) on their bespoke collections.

What to Pick Up

The shop is packed with high-quality, durable gear that is built to survive the salt air:

  • The Island Duffel: The ultimate weekender bag for boat trips.

  • Crossbody Bags & Clutches: Perfectly stylish for a sunset dinner at Firefly or Cap’n Jack’s.

  • Beach Totes: Heavy-duty and water-resistant—ideal for a day at Tahiti Beach.

  • Sailor Dog Accessories: Because even your island pup needs to look the part.

More Than Just Bags: The Bike Shop

Conveniently located in the same space, you’ll find The Bike Shop. Since the main settlement of Hope Town is car-free, renting a bicycle here is the best way to explore the 8-mile stretch of Elbow Cay. They offer well-maintained beach cruisers that are perfect for navigating the narrow, picturesque paths of the island.

Visit the store - in person or online:

  • Location: You can find them on the "high road" (Queen's Highway), just north of the Post Office dock.

  • Sail Trade: Got an old sail taking up space? They have a Sail Trade Program where you can donate your old sails in exchange for credit toward a custom bag or something off the shelf.

  • Shop Online: If you can’t make it to the island this year, they do ship internationally through their website, wsailbags.com.
